As I prepare for a second maternity leave I’ve debated whether or not I should continue to do some freelance work while I’m at home with a new baby and toddler…you know, in all my FREE time!

What is Freelance Writing and Why Should I Care?

I’ve always dreamed of being my own boss.

When I was a little kid I was all about the lemonade stands. I would set up my stand at the end of our driveway and hustle for hours.

When I was a teenager I had grand ideas of opening my own Baby-Sitters Club.

For those of you who are too young to know what I’m talking about, the Baby-Sitters Club was a series of books about a bunch of junior high girlfriends who got together to open a day camp for little kids…of course fun and shenanigans ensued.

The first time I heard about a “side hustle” was probably four years ago.

Prior to that I was deep into my graduate studies.

I mean DEEEEEEEP.

Like I had no life or any awareness of life outside of my dingy, basement lab.

Anyways, when I graduated and re-entered the world as a normally functioning human being I kept hearing the term “side hustle,” “side hustle this, side hustle that.”

As a new grad I was lucky to have no debt. That’s right people, I graduate after 10 years of post-secondary with no debt (find out how here).

How to Make Money as a Teenager

Want to make money as a teenager? Here are some great ways to make some extra cash.

The year was 1996. I was 11 and I wanted a job. So, I picked up the phone book and started flipping through the yellow pages to find a suitable employer.

What’s that you say….a phone book???

Yes, this was back in the old days.

Anyway, after hours of searching and cold calling restaurants and cafes I hadn’t found anyone willing to hire me.
